The Clinical Aphasiology Conference (CAC) is an annual forum for clinicians and researchers engaged in the study and clinical management of persons with acquired neurologic language disorders. At CAC, participants present their recent research and engage in extensive discussions with colleagues. To develop an informal atmosphere conducive to the free exchange of ideas, CAC attendance is limited to approximately 100 people. The CAC Steering Committee, comprised of former conference chairpersons, directs the conference. The 2004 Conference Chairperson is Argye Hillis.

To Attend the Clinical Aphasiology Conference

If you wish to attend the 2004 CAC, you must submit a summary of an original paper or poster, to be received by the Program Chair no later than Monday, January 12, 2004. Two authors from each accepted proposal will be invited to attend the conference. As space permits, first authors of proposals that are not accepted for presentation also will be invited to attend.

Student Fellowships to the 2004 NIDCD Research Symposium in Clinical Aphasiology

A number of fellowships are available on a competetive basis to students who have earned authorship on a paper submitted to CAC. Additional information and an application form are available on the website: www.clinicalaphasiology.org.

The Program Committee Chairperson will make final selections of meritorious proposals based on the combined ratings and comments of the Program Committee and the proposal's potential for contributing to the overall program.

The CAC Program will accommodate approximately 15-20 platform presentations and 15-20 posters. Some longer presentations and special sessions also will be scheduled. Each platform presentation will be 15 minutes in length, followed by a 15-minute discussion with the audience. One or two poster sessions are anticipated, to be approximately two hours in length.

TIMETABLE

January 12, 2004: Deadline for Receipt of Proposal
March 12, 2004: Notification of acceptance or rejection and mailing of CAC registration information.
April 15, 2004: Confirmation of attendance and participation; Payment of registration fees.

2004 CLINICAL APHASIOLOGY CONFERENCE PROPOSAL FORMAT

Your proposal will constitute the application to attend the 2004 Clinical Aphasiology Conference. The same evaluation criteria will be used for both platform and poster presentations. The program committee will determine designation as a poster or platform.

Instructions for Electronic Submission

Submit documents via email to papers@clinicalaphasiology.org. All documents should be named using the following convention:

All documents must be submitted in Word, Wordperfect, or Text format.
Figures should be submitted in .jpg, .bmp, or.gif formats, or included in Microsoft Excel files.

Any documents or figures submitted in an unreadable format will not be considered.

Information to be included in body of the email: Author, Title, Author identified abstract to include the following information:

  1. Title of the Paper.
  2. Author(s): List authors as they should appear on the final program
  3. Author(s) professional affiliation(s).
  4. First author's address, telephone numbers, fax and e-mail. Only the first author will receive notification of acceptance or rejection.
  5. Audiovisual equipment needs. A microphone, slide projector and overhead transparency projector will be available for all papers. VCR and/or PowerPoint projector will be considered when requested in advance with appropriate rationale.
  6. Preferred form for the presentation (poster or platform). If you are willing to present in the alternative format, please indicate.
  7. Indication of intent to submit a separate application for a NIDCD Fellowship.
  8. See description of abstract below.

Attachments:

1. Title and abstract - Abstracts of accepted papers will be printed and distributed to conference participants. Therefore, the abstract should be as informative as possible. Please follow formatting specifications below.

a. Limit abstract to 100 words or less.
b. Type, single-spaced, in 12-point font (Times New Roman preferred) with margins of 1 inch.
c. Prepare 2 abstracts: one with and one without author identification. The author-identified abstract (unnumbered) should contain the title and author identification and be included in the body of the email message. The abstract with no author identification should be submitted in the same file as the summary.

2. Summary (pages 2-5)

a. Not to exceed 1200 words - strictly enforced. (Tables, figures, reference list do not count toward this limit.)
b. The first page of the summary should be a title and abstract page (author unidentified).
c. The summary should describe the research problem & rationale, methods of data acquisition, results and analysis, conclusions, and clinical implications.
d. It should be informative and concise; typed and double-spaced.
e. It should contain no author identification on any page.

Publication Policy

Authors have the option of submitting papers to the Clinical Aphasiology Publication Board for consideration of publication in a special issue of the journal Aphasiology. Manuscripts must follow guidelines provided by the Clinical Aphasiology Publication Board for submission to Aphasiology. All manuscripts submitted for publication are subject to editorial review, and acceptance of a paper for presentation at the Clinical Aphasiology Conference does not constitute acceptance for publication. Abstracts will not be published in lieu of the full paper.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
